** I am guessing that Richard was a son of Richard and Alse ** although I think the evidence quite strong.
He was probably born during the years of the Interregnum when registers weren't always kept well. Although entries for Slapton survive for some of these years there are no birth / baptism records for 1649-52, and few for 1653 and 1654.
Another possibility was that he was the son of a Thomas Prout who married Joane Harvey in Slapton in 1656. No baptisms of children of that marriage found, nor a burial of Thomas and too many Joans to be sure, so they may have left the Parish. Their marriage was also after the gap in the registers so it less likely a son of theirs would be missing, but as marriages are also missing it is possible Thomas had had an earlier marriage.
The missing marriages mean that Ambrose or another son of the Richard who married in 1617 could have married and had children at that time.
However, the fact this Richard had several sons but did not name a one Thomas suggests his father was probably not called Thomas, and it is unlikely there are missing marriages for William or Ambrose as they would have been a bit young to marry during the missing period. Since Richard named a son Christopher that would seem be the most likely name if his father was not Richard.
However, this Richard clearly went in for giving children family names, with his first son known of named Richard, and if he was the son of Richard and Alice, then he also named children after his mother, a brother and a sister, not rare names but not the most common and in combination very unlikely to be due to chance.

Mostly I have the children of Richard and Alse by using the FMP index. I have browsed through all the entries page by page from 1653 to 1662 for any other, especially a son Richard, but without joy.
