Michael CHAMPERNOUN
Set As Default Person -
Name Michael CHAMPERNOUN Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1633 Stokenham, Devon, England
- (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 17 Mar 1632/33 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP)
"Michaell sonne of Nathaniell Chambren"
Gender Male Manorial Between 1667 and 1670 Slapton, Devon, England
Tenant by Copy of Court Roll - Part of a parchment roll for a manor held under Okehampton Castle includes an entry for 'Michaell Champernon' amongst the 'Tennants by Copie of Court Roll for One Life'.
It includes some figures against each person; the first appears to be monetary, presumably rent, the second to refer to an area of land, and the third I do not know (my assumptions in [ ]).
The figures for Michael were:
[£] 00 [s] 00 [d] 04, [acres] 000 [roods] 1 [perches] 00, 001 00 00 (a fourth column is blank for Michael).
Both the first figure (monetary) and the second (land) were smaller for Michael than for anyone else.
(The third set of figures appears as though it could be another monetary amount in the first 3 columns, as the second column as no no. higher than 19, nor the third greater than 10. The fourth column is not included in the totals at the end.)
Another figure appears to the left of most names (occasionally also or instead a ' w'). As for most entries, a '1' appears to the left of Michael.
The details appeared in Devon & Cornwall Notes and Queries, vol. VIII, Jan. 1915, par. 127, p.141ff, a query submitted by 'Rouge-et-Noir'.
Although no manor name is given, a reply by Oswald J. Reichel par. 152, p.183 said:
"I do not think that there can be any doubt but that the manor referred to is that of Slapton. Only four manors in the hundred of Colridge were held of the Manour of Okehampton, vis., Dittisham, Slapton, Inglebourn and West Prawle. As this manor paid to the hundred of Colridge and was held of the Manour of Okehampton, it must be one of these four. At Slapton there are three Coltscombes, a Higher, a Lower and a Lower held with Start farm, and there also is a farm called Buckelton."
The date is my estimate based on looking for CMB events in Slapton for some of the less common names of others listed in the document.

"October Nathaniell Chamborne married Honer Gey the first day of october" - under heading 'Mariages 1625'
That the wife of Nathaniel who had a family in Stokenham was called Honour is known from the PR entry for the baptism of their last child Thomas (the entries for their other children only naming the father). That and the date, 11 months before the baptism of the first child in Stokenham, with the pretty uncommon name Nathaniel Cham(pernown) strongly suggest this Modbury marriage is the right couple.
