Born Abt 1788  Charmouth, Dorset, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Aged 62, born Charminster according to 1851 census, but aged 70, born Charmouth according to the 1861 census!
Charmouth seems probable, as it appears that Charles' previous wife, Charity, was also born in Charmouth. It seems unlikely this was coincidence. What is the chance that Charles would have happened to have two wives both from Dorset, when marrying in the London part of Surrey, AND two places with similar names.  Although the names may suggest they were near each other, Charmouth and Charminster are about 23 miles from each other; there is no reason why two girls from these two places would no each other, and they are not particularly likely to be related. Youngsters from the village of Charminster looking to find work in a town would be likely to look to Dorchester, those in Charmouth to Bridport. Hence it seems probable that it was the 1861 census that was correct, and that Charles married two women from Charmouth because he knew the second, Jane, through the first, Charity.
Charity does not seem to have had a sister Jane, but maybe they were cousins or simply friends who travelled to the London area together.

But were there really two wives from Charmouth? I can find no record of a burial (or death) for Charity; also no evidence of a marriage of Charles to a Jane. Could Charity (or Charles) have take a dislike to the name 'Charity' and started calling herself 'Jane'? Any burial of Charity / marriage of Jane would seem to have taken place between 1825 (when Charity's last known child was baptised) and 1841 (when Charles is in the census with wife Jane). This seems to me quite likely; most PR entries from this period survive, and are quite legible. Most for Charles' family are indexed on both Ancestry and FMP, so any errors in one are probably not in the other - unless due to an ink blot or similar problem with legibility.
However, there are a couple of other possible explanations.
      1. Charles and Charity may have parted company. With the near impossibility of divorce at this time, the only real option to separating and living with a new partner was bigamy or living as husband and wife when not married. If Charles and Charity had separated Charles and Jane may not have wished to risk a bigamous marriage.
      2. Charles may have moved away from Carshalton before later returning there. Charity's burial and Jane's marriage could then be in an area not yet online or where I have not looked.

    • Only death registration in either the original or online index to match the burial is in Brentford RD, not Epsom. This, though, ties in with where Jane and husband Charles were living at the time of the 1861 census, and the burial register shows her abode as Chiswick.
GRO ref: Field, Jane q4 1861 Brentford RD 3a 49; GRO online index shows at age death as 72
Details from death registration entry (PDF of entry), shown as wife of Charles Field Gardener, informant was John Field, present at death, resident Turnham Green - presumably Jane's stepson with this name.

    • No marriage of a Charles Field to a Jane in Surrey Marriage Index 1500 to 1846 (Origins.net, viewed 1 Apr 2012)

I am wondering if Charity just started using the name 'Jane' instead - see birth notes for Jane for my thinking.
