S. Goathams who might have been described as 'nephew').

However, whilst I could easily find Ernest's brother Arthur throughout his life, I at first struggled to know what became of Ernest betwen 1871 and his marriage to Henrietta nearly 60 years later. He was not with his parents / mother and siblings in 1881 or 1891; there is a WW1 medal card for his brother but not for Ernest (this is not surprising, given that he was 18 years older than Arthur); there are London Electoral Roll entries for Arthur but not Ernest. I guessed he may have moved down to Kent where he was later to marry, and whose electoral rolls are not (at the time of researching / writing) online, and his surname is too badly recorded and / or transcribed in the censuses to be found by using Ancestry and FMP indexes. I'd forgotten his alias, recorded when he married Henrietta: Henry Pearce. Forgotten, that is, until I happened to look at the 1911 census entry with Henrietta again; besides Henrietta and the head of the household there was a boarder: Henry Pearce! And his age and birthplace matched those of Ernest. The name Ernest PHELIPPAULT is unique, at least in England; by contrast, there were many Henry Pearces, including others born in the same area and of a similar age. However, most people married, and Ernest / Henry was shown as single in 1911. By the time of the 1901 census 'Henry' was aged about 41, an age by which most people had married. A single Henry, a boarder in Chatham, where he was living in 1911 stuck out as I glanced down a list of possible Henrys.
