Betsy TRANT
Set As Default Person -
Name Betsy TRANT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1804 - From the age in the burial register, though if the name is correct and she didn't just choose to unusual and keep her maidden name Trant as a middle name then it implies she was born before her parents married in 1802.
Gender Female Died 16 Oct 1887 25, South Street, South Molton, Devon, England
- GRO ref: Smith, Betsy Trant q4 1887 aged 83 S. Molton RD 5b 308
'Trant' was Betsy's maiden name, not a 2nd Christian name, but the American style of using a maiden name as a middle name wa adopted when her death was registered.
Actual date and place from probate calendar entry.
Buried 21 Oct 1887 St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, South Molton, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 27 Apr 2015)
Shown as aged 83 years.
Also shows Betsy's name as 'Betsy Trant Smith'. This is surprising and implies Betsy had the middle name Trant. If correct she was probably born before her parents married, as Betsy Trant LEAMAN.
Perhaps though with the surname Smith she choose to use Trant to distinguish her from all the other Betsy Smiths. Or had the person providing the information travelled to America where using a maiden name like this seems a common practice, and applied it to her?
