At the time of the census in 1851 (30 March) William was lodging with a Richard Shepherd and his family, including 2 Marys, wife and daughter of Richard. It seems natural to suppose that it was one of those Marys he married, the mother, about 13 years his senior, or the daughter, about 18 years his junior.
Her description on the marriage certificate of spinster and daughter of Richard points to the daughter in the 1851 household.
