  	The combination of 'Elliott' with the name 'George' may suggest an enthusiam for the writer (George Eliot), especially as siblings included one brother with the first name 'Horatio' and another with the middle name 'Nelson', suggesting a couple who were happy to name children after heros. However, it is clear that Elliott was his paternal grandmother's surname. But was its use with the first name 'George' chance or a nod to the writer? - I don't know, but given that he was a firstborn, and both his father and paternal grandfather were called George it was most likely chance.
