  • Name John HALKE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born 23 Jul 1710
    • Date from baptism record.
Date of birth agrees with that suggested on the age of the gravestone of the John who is buried in Nackington, suggesting it was the same John.
Baptised 8 Aug 1710  St. James the Great Church, Elmstead, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From the PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 6 Aug 2015)
"Halkes - John the son of John Halkes and Abigale his Wife was born the 23rd: of July and Baptized August the 8th. 1710."
John was 'of Petham' when he married in 1733 but there is not an obvious baptism there, so he may have been born elsewhere.
Although there were Halkes in Petham before and after this time, and some we may assume (from children born earlier and burials later) were living in Petham around the time John was born, there is no sign of baptisms between 1696 and 1719.
If he was the son of Thomas  and Sarah who had children baptised in the 1690s then he may be the son of the Thomas who was left a bequest by the Rev. John Halke, and it would not be surprising if his son should enter the church.

FMP have transcribed a baptism on 8 May 1698 as John Haulk, son of Mathew. Looking at the image of the PR page (on FMP) it is far too unclear to be sure.
The KFHS transcription has this as John son of Valentine Austen; to me the general shape is more consistent with this than with Mathew Haulk.

"John Hawkes of Petham and Abigail Fordred of St Stephens were marryed } March.7 1699." - under heading '1699'
Thomas, probably John and Abigail's first child was baptised in Hastingleigh - perhaps this was where Abigail's family then lived. By 1704 they were in the neighbouring parish of Elmstead and appear to have remained there until John's death some 20 years later. However, when daughter Abigail married she was 'of Hastingleigh' so perhaps the family or some of it moved there, possibly to Abigail (the mother's) relations, after losing their husband and father.
John and William inherited property from their grandfather in 1728, and this is probably why they were 'of Petham' at the time of their marriages in the 1730s.
