Notes - (Research):Who was Elizabeth?
The description of her as 'of Elmstead' at the time of her marriage suggests she could have been the Elizabeth daughter of John and Abigail, baptised in Elmsted in 1704. However, when the grandfather of that Elizabeth died in the 1728 he left bequests to other children of his son John, but there is no mention of granddaughter Elizabeth (in the register copy of the will). Petham PRs suggest Elizabeth the wife of John Birch was still living then.

Thomas, probably John and Abigail's first child was baptised in Hastingleigh - perhaps this was where Abigail's family then lived. By 1704 they were in the neighbouring parish of Elmstead and appear to have remained there until John's death some 20 years later. However, when daughter Abigail married she was 'of Hastingleigh' so perhaps the family or some of it moved there, possibly to Abigail (the mother's) relations, after losing their husband and father.
John and William inherited property from their grandfather in 1728, and this is probably why they were 'of Petham' at the time of their marriages in the 1730s.

"John Birch of Pettam & Elizabeth Halke of Elmsted were Maryed Decembr. the sixth 1720"
I am guessing that is was this Elizabeth who married John Birch, though her description at the time of marriage as 'of Elmstead' is a strong clue. Unlike her sisters she is not mentioned in her grandfather's will, but he removed one of her sisters after they married and he advanced what he was going to leave. Since Elizabeth married before he wrote his will he had probably given what he would otherwise have left to her when she married.
There were lots of children of John and Elizabeth Birch baptised (and a number of burials of children) in Petham in the 20 or so years after the marriage of this John and Elizabeth.
However, a John Birch of Petham had married an Elizabeth Spain there in 1714, and I suspect some of the children were the offspring of that couple; it's possible there was 1 or more other couples with the same names that I haven't noticed.
For the moment, therefore, I am not adding any children of John and Elizabeth to this tree.
