      Norton Halke, Gen. quæ obiit
      20 die Octobris, 1661. Et Elizabethæ
      Uxoris secundæ eiusdem Roberti,
      Filiæ primogenitæ Richardi Head
      Armigeri, quæ obiit 2 die Augusti,
      Anno 1663. Has tantum terris
      Ostendunt fata, nec ultra
      Esse sinunt."

      which translated means:

      "Among the relics of death
      Beneath this stone rests
      In peace, Elizabeth
      First wife of Robert Fane,
      Knight, only daughter of
      Norton Halke Gent. who died
      the 20th day of October, 1661. And Elizabeth
      The second wife of Robert,
      The eldest daughter of Richard Head
      Esquire, who died the 2 day of August,
      In the year 1663.
      ??" [I'm not sure about the last bit - something like 'Are only fate on earth, no longer are we allowed to be']

      Noted by Hasted, 1798 and inscription recorded in Rawlinson, Richard 'History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Rochester', 1723, London, p.28 - view online on Google books.
      Also in Registrum Roffense by John Thorpe (p.723) - online copy
      Described as memorial in nave by Hasted but as gravestone by Thorpe and Rawlinson. Gravestone may imply on the floor, where it could well have been worn away by the passage of feet over the centuries.
