  • Name Agnes LYSTER
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born
    • After 1580 not yet 21 when her father wrote his will in 1599; named after her sister Elizabeth, who was also under 21, so probably younger than her.
Baptised Feb 1585/86  St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Appledore, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From AT entry (image on microfilm, viewed at London FHC on 4 Aug 2016):
"[?] of February was baptised Agnes
[dau]ghter of William Lyster & Susanne his wife" - under heading for year 1585-1586.
    Gender Female
Residence From 1639 to 1644  Mersham, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • At the time Agnes wrote her will and when she died - probably not too long before her will was proved in 1644
    Will 20 Mar 1638/39
    Written
    • The copy says written 20: March 1639 which I would expect to mean 1639 / 40, but Agnes' probate inventory was taken in December 1639, and a burial that fits her was in November that year, so clearly the date on the will copy means 20 March 1638/39.
(from original will, PRC 31/118 O/1)
    Died Nov 1639
    • Between writing her will in May 1639 and a probate inventory being made in Dec, clearly the burial below is hers.
Buried 10 Nov 1639  St. John the Baptist Church, Mersham, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    Probate Inventory 12 Dec 1639
    Taken
    • Exhibited in court 5 May 1641
    Probate 5 May 1641
    • Granted to her daughter Jane who she had named in her will. In her will she also requested her borther-in-law William Halke to act as overseer, but it appears he predeceased her.
Probate was granted the same day that the inventory of Agnes's goods was exhibited in the court.

    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Oct 2015)
"Boys Ower & An Lyster were maried the 7th of October" - under heading 'Mariages Ano dni 1599'
A note beside the grant of administration for her father's will, added the year after (27 Nov 1600) records that by then Agnes had married Boys Ower. Hence Agnes must have married between May 1599, when her father wrote his will and Nov 1600. Although the PR entry shows An not Agnes it therefore seems almost certain that this was an error and the marriage was of this Agnes.
More supporting evidence is in the bonds which Boys Ower provided, one of which records him as a gentleman. Agnes' family seem to have been on the yeoman / gentleman borderline, so Boys' social standing is consistent with what we would expect. Added to which, I have now seen the wills of both Boys and Agnes, both refer to William Halke as brother-in-law, and in Agnes's William's wife Elizabeth and son Norton are also named, showing that it is the same Halke family (William and Elizabeth are obviously common names, but I am not aware of another Norton Halke).
