George APSLEY
Set As Default Person -
Name George APSLEY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1550 - Very approximate - I am guessing he was a similar age to William Lyster, who was a brother-in-law, but I only have an estimate for William's date of birth - and of course brothers-in-law can vary quite a bit in ages.
Gender Male Occupation Benenden, Kent, England
Husbandman / Yeoman - Mentioned in these Quarter Session Records of 1601 - ref: QM/RLv/109 and QM/RLv/106
Buried 29 Sep 1613 St. George’s Church, Benenden, Kent, England
- From KFHS transcribed data (CD 12) - shows George Apsley, householder.
Notes - (Research):I think it was probably this George Apsley who was the brother-in-law of William Lyster, referred to in William's will (where George was 'of' not mentioned).
It was, though, quite a common name, and there were others in Sussex (one of Pulborough was not only some distance away but seems two well off to have borrowed a small sum like described in William's will). Benenden is quite close to Appledore and I think that George the most likely.
The will of a Mary Apsley of Benenden who died in 1617 does not clarify. Almost all those are descendants of Mary (they do include a Thomas), not siblings / in-laws.
It may be significant that George had a son named Paschall, and William Lister was involved in looking after money a Paschall Slowman left for other Slowmans (described in William's will). Also, Paschall Slowman refers to a 'siter in lawe Apsely' in his will, as well as mentioning a George Apsely who owed him money, and had children Thomas and Mary. [p.2 of will, viewed and photoed Jul 2016]
A George and Jane Apsley had a number of children baptised in Benenden around the 1630s; that George could be a descendant of this one, but given there were other Apsleys in Benenden at this time it cannot be assumed without other evidence. (A Thomas son of Thomas was baptised in 1603, and George and Jane named their 1st son Thomas; maybe Thomas was a son of this George, and the later George his son).
If, as seems likely, it was the same Apsley family that was related to both William Lyster and Paschall Slowman, then the witnesses to Paschall's will adds weight to the suggestion it is the Benenden Apsley family. One witness was George Apsley, the other the minister of Benenden.

Family Mary, d. Between 8 Oct 1617 and 23 Nov 1617 Married - In her will Mary refers to daughters 'Debora and Anne'. Deborah being a fairly unusual name at the time I think we can be reasonably confident that it was the same Deborah who was shown as daughter of George when baptised, and hence that George and Mary were husband and wife.
