    • GRO ref: Swan, Mary q4 1863 Saffron W 4a 259; GRO online index shows age at death as 78, suggesting born about 1785
      The age at death being right for this Mary, together with the 'matching' burial being in Little Sampford, pointed strongly to this being the death of this Mary and it is confirmed by the death registration (GRO register entry), from which the place and date come.
      It shows the informant was her husband, James, a farm labourer.

      (Other possible deaths in the GRO paper index can be ruled out from the age at death:
      Swan, Mary Ann q3 1862 Saffron W 4a 216; GRO online index shows at at death as 1 so clearly not this one
      Swan, Mary Ann q3 1865 Saffron W. 4a 242 (NBI index shows aged 7 so not this one)
      (above looking on FreeBMD for Mary Swans who died in Saffron Walden RD between 1861 and 1890; there are a few others as Swann - ages not checked where not given; not the Mary Swann died 1875, aged 84 as she matches the wife of Daniel in the 1871 census)
      Of course it is possible that Mary moved from Saffron Walden RD; if she outlived James she may have moved to live with a child further afield.)
