The inscriptions on the Glanville Memorial
Named on his father's memorial "7 Thomas" (the number '7' indicates birth order)Gender Male Residence 1631 Sortridge, nr Horrabridge, Peter Tavy, Devon, England
- Living and 'of Sortridge' when his mother wrote her will
Died - Vivian shows mentioned in his brother Francis' IPM - I guess this shows he was alive when the inquisition took place (21 Mar 1638/9) but I'm not sure. I have photos and have spotted where Thomas is mentioned but my limited Latin (and time) means I have yet to work out what it says regarding him!
Certainly must have died between 1631 (alive at the time of a Chancery case) and 1664 (when his wife was buried described as a widow).
Buried 30 Mar 1641 St. Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock, Devon, England
- Clearly died before 1664 when his wife was described as a widow when buried.
I suspect this burial was this Thomas. His uncle had already died and I don't know of another likely to be in Tavistock and described as a gent. Also, I have found no other burial likely to be this Thomas in Whitchurch or Tavistock, the most likely places for his burial.

Notes - Thomas is one of those whose lives is mis-reported through the dishonest writings of William Urmston Searle Glanville Richards. The mistakes are not just in Richards book "Records of the Anglo-Norman House of Glanville" but in "The Abbots of Tavistock: with Views Beyond" written by the then Vicar, the Rev. D. P. Alford and published in 1891. The Rev. Alford was writing the preface to the book in November 1891, just a few months after Richards had been imprisoned for making changes to Harleian manuscripts in the British Library. Reported in some papers, this either did not come to the notice of Alford, or he failed to realise the significance, that he had used a book written by Richards for information in the book he was about to publish.

It is curious that the effigies of the children have been beheaded (5) and disappeared altogether (2), while John and Alice have remained more-or-less intact (some damage to their noses seems to have occurred but been repaired).
Mrs Bray and others claim the damage was done by parliamentarian troops during the civil wars. While noting that there is no evidence given Gerry Woodcock notes that the "family ... at Kilworthy, provided ... the most prominent spokesmen in Tavistock of the royalist…Family ID F7814 Family Group Page | Family Chart
Family Joanna CALMADY, bap. 21 Oct 1590, St. Mary the Virgin’s Church, Bratton Clovelly, Devon, England
, bur. 11 Nov 1664, St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England
(Age ~ 74 years) Married Abt 1624 (probably), St. Peter’s Church, Lewtrenchard, Devon, England
- Date assumed from marriage licence.
It seems reasonable to suppose the marriage was this Thomas - being of Tavistock, a gent and a likely age to marry.
Marriage probably at Lewtrenchard, as Alford refers to the suggestion of Thomas Glanville to Joanna Calmady being suggested to him by the Vicar of Lewtrenchard; he would be likely to have been familiar with the PRs, not the marriage licences. However, the registers before 1706 seem not now to survive. The transcribed entries (images on FMP) jumps from marriages in 1623 to 1626; it is headed "A copy of the Transcripts now existing at the Diocesan Registry of lew Trenchard before 1660", i.e. it is not a transcript of the the deteriorating PR put together from BTs; the patchy survival of these no doubt explains the gaps.
