Mary HOLKHAM to Joseph TAPNER
A snag with this being the right marriage is the baptism of Rachel in 1772. That there was a Joseph Tapner who married Mary Hacom in 1778 seems clear. So were there 2 Josephs, did this one marry twice or was there a mistake in the baptism register and Rachel was not the son of Joseph? (see Rachel's entry for more on this last possibility)
Whatever the answer, it seems reasonable to suppose that the children bapt in Boxgrove 1778 - 1789 were the offspring of the Joseph and Mary who married in 1778.
The SFHG Marr Index has separate entries for the marriage licence (see below) and the marriage, 2 days later.
It shows the marriage as taking place in Westhampnett.
Tony Holkham's index, however, which also has entries for both the licence and the marriage shows the marriage as having been at Boxgrove! It has witnesses for the wedding - Richard Smith and William Rapson.

Who was Elizabeth?
In 1812 an Elizabeth Tapner marr James Holcomb in Boxgrove; had children baptised in 1814 (Mary) and 1821 (Harriet) but none after.
In 1811 there was a marriage in Chichester between a Charles Holkham (sawyer of Halnaker) and Elizabeth Taylor of Boxgrove. It was probably this couple who had children bapt in Boxgrove - Elizabeth in 1812, Harriet in 1817, Charles in 1820. Prob also theirs was Geo bapt 1815 in Westbourne.
The above 2 Elizabeths seem the most likely candidates to be the one who married Joseph Bayley. Haven't found burial of a James or Charles Holkham at the right time but I believe it was Elizabeth nee Tapner, widow of James, who married Joseph for the following reasons:
- 1851 census shows a 'dau' Caroline, aged 33, with Joseph and Elizabeth. Bapt of Caroline not found, but she was with Mary Tapner at the time of the 1841 census, who I believe was the mother of the Elizabeth Tapner who married James. It seems more likely that Mary would have a granddaughter living with her than a more distant relation.
- Age of the Elizabeth who married Joseph is shown in the 1851 census as 71, consistent with the age of Elizabeth Tapner, dau of Mary
- The marriage of Elizabeth H and Joseph Bayley was witnessed by a George Tapner. Elizabeth Tapner had both a brother and an uncle called George.
