The Rev. John GLANVILLE
Set As Default Person -
Name John GLANVILLE Prefix The Rev. Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1566 - This date may suggest that John was born somewhat later than I have estimated. His sister Joan (a 2nd dau) was old enough to have 6 children before their father died, and Eulalia (3rd dau) to have married by 1590, but their parents may have had several daughters before sons came along, and if there were 2 Johns and this one was a seventh he could have been born c. 1590 and gone to university at the usual age. On the other hand, his uncle Judge John's wife Alice had a brother who went to university as a mature student. Also, this is only the date for him being awarded a B.D. This was a postgraduate degree, and I guess John could have taken it sometime after his studies as an undergraduate.
Because it appears to be this John who signed the pedigree drawn up by the heralds in their visitation of 1620, and Vivian shows that that visitation provided the information that this John married Anna Rilston and was Rector of Withell there seems little doubt about it.
Gender Male Residence 1 Feb 1599/00 Tavistock, Devon, England
- Referred to in an indenture his uncle John Glanville was party to on 1 Feb 1599/1600 (where referred to as gentleman of Tavistock)
Education 1611 Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England
Graduated B.D. Occupation From 13 Aug 1614 to 31 Aug 1632 Withiel, Cornwall, England
Rector - This John from 1620 heralds' visitation (as recorded in Vivian, Cornwall)
Dates from CCEd website.
Foster in Alumni oxonienses shows John as becoming Rector of St. Ewe in 1628, but the CCEd website shows a William Petty as becoming Rector there in 1623 and remaining so until he resigned in 1639.
Died - The CCEd website shows his death as 31 August 1632, but in another case this appears to be the date the death was recorded. I suspect the same is the case here, as he was buried a couple of weeks earlier!
Buried 14 Aug 1632 St. Clement's Church, Withiel, Cornwall, England
- From Cornwall OPC database, source Glencross transcript (viewed 18 May 2016)
Shows Johannes GLANVILLUS, 'Jac: Theologia bacc: Ecclesia: parochialis de Withiell Rector' - this would seem to be from a MI rather than a PR entry, as I think it means 'Here lies: Bachelor of Theology, Rector of the Parish Church of Withiel'
Another source (Vivian, Cornwall vis, footnote to Glanville pedigrees, shows the date as 24 Apl 1631!

Order of sons and order of daughters in Vivian (Cornwall), how the daughters were dispersed amongst the sons not shown.
It is not clear if they had 2 sons called John and 2 called Tobias or if this is a mistake by Vivian. One John is shown by Vivian as dying without issue, the other with, but the 'ob. s. p.' is shown as added by Vivian, not (as some others are) as being in the 1620 visitation. Six sons are numbered, the only 2 for whom a spouse and children are shown are a Tobias and a John for whom no birth order number is given, hence me thinking Vivian may have added the same 2 twice. I am only adding one with each name for the moment.
