Notes - Sarah's father?
With her grandfather in 1871, though described as "niece"; with her mother and George in 1881 - described as 'dau' and with surname as Wells; marr using surname "Beaton"; Sarah was with her 3 children with her mother and George Wells in 1891 - again described as 'dau', although all three children had been registered with mother's maiden name given as Beaton. (Another dressstaymaker was boarding with the family).
Although Sarah was described as George's daughter in two censuses and two of her children as his in the 1901 census I think it unlikely that George Wells was her father, considering the following.
* it was seven years between her birth and her mother's marriage to George (or William);
* she named 'William Beaton, Clerk' as her father when she married (I think an invented father);
* her baptism entry does not name a father.
I have not seen her birth registration, but her birth is only indexed as Beaton, not Wells, which suggests George was not present to acknowledge being the father. Father's of illegitimate children rarely were, so this would not add information to confirm a claim as father, but neither is it sufficient to dismiss him.
Because of the uncertainty over George's Christian name, place of birth and date of birth, and with the name being not uncommon, and in any case 1865 being mid way between censuses, it is difficult to work out where Geo / Wm was living in 1861 and 1871 and whether he may have known Caroline in 1865.

Name of father and age of Harry Knight, as well as his occupation, fit with the Harry baptised in Lurgashall and the one in the navy. Father's occupation not right - land steward (Harry's baptism record shows labourer, and 1871 census labourer and hoop maker) but this was often exaggerated.

Family 2 Harry Stuckey GAPE, b. 5 May 1860, Nutbourne, Westbourne, Sussex, England
, d. 1937, Cromarty, Scotland
(Age 76 years) Married Bef 1895 - Sarah Ann is shown as "Annie Gape or Knight" when her son George Harry was admitted to an industrial school in 1898. The 'or Knight' suggests she had not remarried. Looking for a Gape child shows William Arthur, and his birth registration names Harry GAPE - a stoker (like Harry KNIGHT seems to have been). The similarities to Harry KNIGHT made me wonder if Harry GAPE really existed, but a Harry GAPE appears as a rate payer at the same address that William Arthur was born at in the same year, so I think it safe to assume he was for a while Sarah's partner.
The relationship must have ended by 1899, as in that year not only did Sarah gave birth to a son in Sussex, with no father named on the birth registration and a middle name of Bennett, likely suggesting the surname of the father, but Harry married in Scotland.

Family 3 BENNETT [ ? ], d. Yes, date unknown Married Abt 1899 - Sarah must have had a relationship with someone other than her husband Harry Knight that led to the birth of William in Oct 1899.
Since I have yet to find the fate of Harry or of Sarah I don't know if Sarah was in a stable relationship with someone but because Harry KNIGHT was still living had not married him to avoid bigamy, or if this was a short term relationship.
Harry KNIGHT may not have still been living - he was shown as dead when his son George Harry was admitted to an industrial school in 1898 this may not have been true.
There are clues that Sarah's relationship with a William's father was more than a short term. William being given a middle name Bennett suggests his father may have been a Bennett, perhaps with a clue in his forenames. In addition, when Sarah's daughter Beatrice married in 1910 her address was given as 125 Agincourt Road. By 1921 this was the address not only of Beatrice and her family but also of her brother George Harry and his family. But at the time of Beatrice's marriage it appears to have been the home of a Bennett couple (they were there at the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses). Were they Sarah's partner's parents? Or other family of his?
OR maybe she did not have a Bennett partner; it's possible that the name Bennett was given to her son in acknowledgement of the support given to her by the Bennett couple at 125 Agincourt Road.
More research to be done!
