George Harry (“Henry”) KNIGHT
Set As Default Person -
Name George Harry (“Henry”) KNIGHT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 8 Apr 1888 Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
- GRO ref: Knight, George Harry q2 1888 Portsea RD 2b 452; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Beaton
Date and place (Southsea) from Royal Marine papers. 1939 register agree's birth date of 8 April but shows year as 1887. However, as his birth was registered in 1888 I think that's when it occurred.
Gender Male Education From 10 Jun 1898 Barnes Home Industrial School for Boys, Didsbury Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport, Lancashire, England
Musician - Aged 10, on 9 June 1898 George was ordered to be detained until 16 under the Industrial Schools Am. Act of 1880, having been charged with "Frequenting the Company of prostitutes." If 10 seems a bit young for this it probably meant he was with his family. Further down the page in the industrial school's admission page in which we can read this is shown his parentage. His father was dead, his mother (named as 'Annie Gape or Knight') with occupation given as 'Prostitute'. Shown as 'of no fixed abode', in 1891 he, along with his mother and sisters, had been living with his grandmother and her husband; his grandmother had also been a prostitute. By 1901 his older sister Beatrice (12 in 1898) was also in an industrial school; it wouldn't surprise me if she too had been working as a prostitute and if it was this that led to her admission (no papers seem to survive for that school).
His previous character was given as 'good' and I suspect the admission was for his benefit. Although the wording of the admission register suggests the boy was at fault ('With what charged', 'Sentence of Detention', 'Previous Character') looking through a number of entries whilst there are a few for boys who weer behaving badly it seems common that for many, perhaps most, a boy was admitted as his parents couldn't cope due to their own problems or issues. It clearly did not cause a separation from his family as in 1921 his family and that of his older sister Beatrice were living in the same house.
A report in 1896 had shown that 45 out of the 252 boys at the school training for an occupation were training as musicians. There was both a brass and reed band and a drum and fife band.
Military From 20 Nov 1903 to 23 Oct 1909 Royal Marine Light Infantry: Chatham Division - Enlisted at Manchester, discharged as transferred to Royal Navy
(info from Royal Marines register of service - ADM 159/60/14382)
Military From 1909 Royal Navy School of Music Residence From 1921 to 1949 125, Agincourt Road, Mile End, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
- In 1921 'Henry' and his family (i.e. his wife and 4 daughters) were living at this addres, which is that from which his sister Beatrice married in 1910.
He was still there with his wife in 1939; though none of the four daughters with them in 1921 remained at home, a fifth daughter and three sons had taken their place.
It was still his home at the time of his death
Occupation 1921 Tramway conductor - Working for the Corporation Tramway Department, which was based in the Town Hall in Portsmouth.
Occupation 1939 Coach painter Died 19 Dec 1949 St. Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
- GRO ref: Knight, George H q4 1949 aged 62 Portsmouth RD 6b 510; GRO online index shows middle name as Harry
Although there were lots of George H Knights in Portsmouth, not only was this one was registered with his age given as 62 when he died - very close to the age of this George Henry, but also the probate calendar entry gives an address which had long been George's home AND it names his wife as Daisy May.

Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Apr 2023)
Name of father and age of Harry Knight, as well as his occupation, fit with the Harry baptised in Lurgashall and the one in the navy. Father's occupation not right - land steward (Harry's baptism record shows labourer, and 1871 census labourer and hoop maker) but this was often exaggerated.
