William GRILLS
Set As Default Person -
Name William GRILLS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Between 1518 and 1533 South Hill, Cornwall, England
- Date according to Star Chamber case, the bill of which describes him as aged about 60 when he married young Dionisia Glanville, but William himself in his answer claims he was only about 45.
Place from William's will where in a bequest to the poor of Southill he describes it as 'where I was born'
Gender Male Occupation to 1580 Launceston, Cornwall, England
Woollen Draper - Allowed his Dionisia wife to take over the business when he married her (according to Bill in Star Chamber case), but in his answer William claimed they continued as woollen drapers for about two years after the marriage, when they became merchants of general wares.
Civic duty From 1583 to 1584 Launceston, Cornwall, England
Mayor of the Borough of Dunheved - List on the Launceston then! website shows 'William Grylles' as Mayor for the year 1583-4. There was a change of mayor each year in the borough at this time, but with the same names performing the office again a few years later.
In William's case he was mayor again in 1594-5.
Will 20 Dec 1602 Written Died Between 20 Dec 1602 and 9 Feb 1602/03 (probably), Launceston, Cornwall, England
- Between writing his will, in which he describes himself as 'of Launceston', and it being proved.
In his will he describes Tavistock as 'where I have sometime of late lived'. Also from his will it is clear he had a lease on a house there, in which his wife Diones was living; maybe they were sometimes living together again by 1602. Whether or not it was with Diones, if he sometimes lived in Tavistock, then that could have been where he was when he died.

- I had wondered if it was this Dionisia who married William Grills, but it is now clear that it was.
William Grills named as 1st husband of Dionis, daughter of merchant John of Tavistock, from Vivian, citing 1620 Devon visitation for his surname.
Marriage details from Cornwall FHS transcribed data on FMP (viewed 22 Jun 2016) - shows Duens GLANVILE to William GRILLS.
A reference to the marriage of a William Grills of Launceston to Dyones Glanvile in a case in the Court of Star Chamber on the AALT website described her as 'a woman alone the age of xvj or xvij yeares'. Two bills survive, and having seen the documents it is clear that the AALT did not record the document acurately - it actually says 'about[e] the age of xvi or xvii yeares' (AALT now corrected). There are also numerous references to her brothers, Mr Nicholas Glanvile and Mr Serjeant Glanvile.
