Personal Information    |    PDF

  • Name Charles EVANS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Gender Male
    Occupation Policeman
    Died Between 1838 and 1841
    • Had a daughter born in 1839, his wife Charlotte remarried as a widow in 1841 (to William Goatham).
    Notes
    • With no marriage found, nor a death of Charles I can't help wondering if he really existed, or was invented for decency's sake when Charlotte got pregnant. Given how common illegitimate births were it seems a bit unlikely, and if it was Charles was a fiction she persisted with the story, marrying William Goatham as a widow, Charlotte Evans.

Other Partners: William GOATHAM  m. 15 May 1841
    Married Bef 1841
    • Assuming Charles and Charlotte did marry, it must have been before Charlotte remarried in 1841, and probably before their daughter Jane was born in 1839.

No marriage found on FreeBMD (covers July 1837 on),  in the indexes to Kent marriages on FMP, nor on Ancestry which covers much of London.
No death of a Charles Evans found near Faversham, the only deaths of Evans registered in the area in the right timeframe have the wrong forename and seem too old to be likely: James (Evans or Evians) in Hollingbourn 1838, aged 47 and John in Blean RD in 1840, aged 77. This begs the question: did he exist? If he was created to disguise an illegitimate birth (which seems unlikely given how common they were and how generally accepted by the working class) Charlotte seems to have gone to great lengths to maintain the fiction.
