  • Name Victor WARREN
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born 31 Aug 1875  25, Dover Street, Sittingbourne, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • GRO ref: Gillingham, Victor Warren q4 1875 Milton RD 2a 757; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Goatham
The legitimate son of William Charles Gillingham, as indicated by his birth certificate, but I doubt he ever lived with his lawful father. Almost certainly the natural (biological) son of Cubison. The fact his mother / parents were able to give him the middle name 'Warren' suggests Isabell had already separated from her husband.
    Gender Male
Education From 12 Jun 1882 to Feb 1886  Sittingbourne Wesleyan School, Sittingbourne, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Admitted into class 5, his previous school was recorded as 'Private' - a private school or educated privately at home? I suspect the latter.
Also known as Victor Warren GILLINGHAM
    Occupation 1891
    Pawnbroker's Assistant

    • At the time his mother died.
(Although his mother's death certificate (GRO copy) gives the informant's name as J Warren, Son I believe this must be a mis-reading of V Warren.)
Residence From 1911 to 1921  The Ship Hotel, 22, High Street, Queenborough, Sheppey, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • With Victor  in 1911 were his wife Kate and son, also his father and his Kate's paternal grandmother and sister Maud (link to Kate's relations found by research, not shown in the census entry). Maud was recorded as a 'servant'.
By 1921 the household consisted of Victor and Kate, their son, Victor's father and a servant - 'barmaid and assists in house', 21 year old Annie Hilda Chambers, who had been born in Queenborough.

In 1901 the Hotel keeper had been Victor's wife's grandmother, and Kate and a son William had been working for her.

    Married Aft 1871
    • Between 1871 and 1881 Isabel and her husband William Gillingham separated and by 1881 Isabel was living with Cubison Warren. The Christian names of Isabel's two children born in 1875 and 1881 plus both later using the surname Warren suggest that Cubison Warren was their father, and that suggests Isabel and Cubison may have been living together by 1875.

Cubison was also married when he and Isabel got together. The 1871 census suggests that he had separated from his wife by then.

Cubison and Isabel appear never to have married, although while Isabel and her children were recorded with the surname Gillingham in the 1881 census, by the 1891 they were using the surname Warren, with Cubison and Isabel appearing as husband and wife (as they did too in 1901).
Isabel would have been free to remarry after her husband died in 1904, and Cubison after his wife died in 1905, so there was a small window when they could legally have done so. Maybe they didn't know, maybe after 30 years of living as though married it just didn't seem worth the trouble.
Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry

    Separated Bef 1881
    • William and Isabell were living separately at the time of the 1881 census (3/4 April) and not found together in subsequent censuses.
They appear to have separated between 1871 and 1881, probably by 1875 when Isabel seems to have had a son whose father was not William.
