Gladys CARTER
Set As Default Person -
Name Gladys CARTER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 28 Jun 1920 22, Lower Range Road, Denton, Gravesend, Kent, England
- GRO ref: Carter, Gladys q3 1920 mother's maiden name: Gootham, Strood RD 2a 1446
Actual date from 1939 register and death registration index. With her mother (and maternal grandparents) in the 1921 census where shown as aged 11 months.
Gladys was born (and conceived) well after her mother's first husband, William Carter, had filed for divorce. Although it took some time for the divorce to go through, I don't think this indicates a change of mind on William's part. Gladys cannot have been conceived before Sept. 1919, but William signed his petition in June 1919. From the divorce papers and from the fact that William was adamant that Gladys' older sister Florence was not his daughter I think there was probably no relationship between Annie and William after he came back from the war.
Gladys was registered at birth as the daughter of William Richard (as was Florence) but this could just indicate that he was her legal daughter: he was married to her mother and he was around (i.e. not in prison or abroad or simiar). I doubt she was the daughter of Annie's second husband, as the re-marriage of Annie might have been expected sooner after the divorce if she were - and she might have taken his surname.
When she married, Gladys named her father as the deceased William Carter, again suggesting she was not the daughter of George Down. Gladys claimed William was a deceased fireman. Though the name is that of her mother's first husband, he was alive at the time of the 1939 register, with no sign of his death between then and Gladys' marriage, and he was a plumber, not a fireman, in documents I have seen. If William was her father she may have pretended he had died to avoid the need for his permission to marry, as she was still a minor.
