  • Name Samuel SERVANT
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1708
    • Estimated from dob of his wife
    Baptised
    • * Possibly * the son of another Samuel Servant, baptised in Spofforth on 20 July 1701.
Although Spofforth parish adjoins Knaresborough and is close to Hampsthwaite at its closest, that Samuel was shown as living in Wetherby (before this was a parish in its own right) and so was about 13 miles from Hampsthwaite. Far enough to be cautious and look for others.
It is noticeable that Samuel and his wife were keen to give a son the name John, using it for four sons, starting before naming one Samuel or any others. Does this indicate that Samuel's father was named John?
There was a yeoman John in Hampsthwaite when Samuel lived there. Was he his father, or maybe Samuel was orphaned and John some other relation? (As a yeoman it would appear John was probably somewhat better off than this family, but if a son Samuel could have been a younger son and not inherited much).

    • No Servants in Knaresborough PRs before a couple of marriages in 1729 (John) and 1730 (William), and then baptisms of some children, not from either of those marriages but of a Samuel from 1737, Samuel and Mary from 1744.
It appears Samuel and Mary moved to Knaresborough parish from elsewhere.
In the neighbouring parish of Hampsthwaite a Samuel and Mary married in 1731, had children baptised there in 1732 and 1733 and then vanish from that parish.
It would appear that Samuel and Mary had moved into Knaresborough parish.

Marriage details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Feb 2017)
"Samuel Servant weaver & Mary Horner both of this parish after lawfull pubn: were married July 8th 1731."

A Thomas son of Samuel was buried in Knaresborough on 28 June 1764; I don't know if he was the son of Samuel and Mary or of their son Samuel.
