"Knight _ John S. of William & Barbara _ Jany 3 March 3"
Another John, John the mariner, appears to have been born c. 1814 from the censuses, and this fits with the John baptised in 1814, especially as that John had a father John, and this John's father was shown on his marriage PR entry to be named William.
The real contender to the baptism of this John is this birth recorded in the register of St. Peter's Baptist Church:
"John, Son of William & Elizabeth Knight born at Dumpton June 19th 1810"
(from register, image on FMP, viewed 15 May 2017; TNA ref: RG/4/2309)
Not only did both Johns' fathers have the same Christian name but they would also have been the same age at the time of the censuses. I have not spotted a burial for either in infancy which might clarify which John this John was.
Unfortunately this John did not name a daughter Barbara or Elizabeth; a Barbara at least would have been a clue as to which John he was. There is a real discrepancy though between the birthplace given for this John - always 'Northdown' on the censuses, and that for the St. Peter's birth - 'Dumpton'.
Northdown was in St. John's (Margate) Parish; though on the borders with St. Peter's it is to the north of St. Peter's village. By contrast Dumpton is to the south of St. Peter's village, on the border between St. Peter's and St. Laurence' in Thanet parishes.
This John did marry in St. Peter's (though in the Anglican Church, although by that time marriage in non-conformist churches was allowed) but his residence was shown as George Hill, i.e. that part of St. Peter's parish adjoining Northdown. Of course it is possible that Dumpton was a mistake, or that William and Elizabeth moved to Northdown when John was very young and he mistakenly thought that that was where he had been born. Unfortunately there seem to be no more children of William and Elizabeth who might show whether or not they stayed in Dumpton.
Although at least one of this John's grandsons was very active in the Baptist Church, this John had his children (at least the older ones) baptised in Anglican Churches, first in St. Peter's and then in St. John's; there seems to be no indication that he himself was a Baptist.
William and Barbara appear to have moved to Wingham after the baptism of their son John, which may be significant as next door to the parish where this John's wife Harriet Shaxted was from. She was living in Monkton at the time of their marriage so it is not obvious where they met. On the other hand, a John Knight married Sarah Johnson in Wingham in 1832 - was that the son of William and Barbara? Unfortunately I cannot find John and Sarah in any census (they were clearly not the John and Sarah with 3 Fox children in Ash, since a John Knight married a Sarah Fox in 1836 that fits them). Maybe one or both died before the censues. A 28 year old Sarah was buried in Monkton in 1834 - the burial register gives no clue as to whether she was spinster, wife or widow. Could this John have married both Sarah and Harriet - he was described as bachelor when he married Harriet but could this be a mistake? More research might give more clues but is outside the scope of this study.
Taking all the above together it seems to me probable that this John was the one baptised at St. John's in 1811, son of William and Barbara BUT if I were descended from them and be tracing John's ancestors further back I would want more evidence before doing so.
