Most of the prizes went to men; at the aforesaid show only one of the fifteen prizes in the categories mentioned went to a woman: first prize in the 'Children in Service' category was awared to 'Mary Ann Hadlow, 50, employed by Mr. R. Foord, Borden, having 6 children in [creditable] service'.
(mostly from report in The South Eastern Gazette, description of the service as 'creditable' from a similar report in The Kentish Gazette, both of 2 Nov 1852)
Summary of the event:
"On Wednesday last, the annual dinner, ploughing match, and distribution of prizes in connexion with this useful and flourishing association took place, under promising auspices. Considering the state of the weather there was a good attendance at the ploughing match, which came off in a field beloning to Mr. Richard Foord, in the parish of Borden. The competition by the various ploughs was creditably sustained, and the work generally well done. The prizes were then distributed to the successful candidates, of which the following is a list ..."
