Middle name relationship After Eliza GOATHAM, a servant with whom her father had worked ... - The reason for Daisy's middle name of Goatham is not entirely clear. Daisy was not a name with which her birth was registered - then she was simply Eliza Goatham JOHNSON. She would appeared to be named after an Eliza GOATHAM who spent most of her life in service, and at the time of the 1871 census was working for the same couple as Daisy's father in Hastings. George was the butler, Eliza, twelve years his senior, the lady's maid, and as the 'upper' servants (out of seven) probably knew each other well.
Even so, it would seem there must have been a special reason for giving a daughter Eliza's names. Some people gave most or all of their children a surname as a middle name, but not George and Emily. Only two of 13 other children had a middle name, and then usual Christian names - one son was given his father's names, George Walter, while one daughter was Ethel Louise.
It would seem Eliza GOATHAM must have done something special to be so honoured.
She lived until 1907 so the name was not given in memory of her. Had she helped the family in some way? Maybe helped George find work, or cared for Emily if she was ill when expecting Daisy? Had she introduced Daisy's parents to each other? We will probably never know, if the story was passed on it has probably been lost by now. I plan to see Eliza's will; it will be interesting to see if she remember Daisy in it. However, whilst Eliza did not marry and her only son only lived for 7 months she had a number of siblings / half siblings and over 30 nephews and nieces, many of whom outlived her. A brother-in-law or nephew was her executor. It is therefore quite likely that all of her estate went to her relations.
(I have explored Daisy's family enough to think that any relationship with Eliza is very unlikely - her parents were from different parts of the country).

In the 1911 census Emily described the 'present marriage' as having lasted 40 complete years - though it was only 37, and as having produced 14 children, 13 of whom were still living.
That may mean she was counting Frank. In the 1871 census Frank, aged 3, was shown as being 'son' to the head of the household, although it was unlikely he was the son of 58 year old Mary A Dawson! Also present was 2 year old Harry, like Frank with no mother's maiden name in the GRO online index, indicating he was probably illegitimate. Was he another son of Emily? With Harry's birth registered in q3 of 1868 and Frank's birth registered in q1 of the same year I think it is safe to assume they had a different mother. Sister's of Emily were present in the same household in 1871 old enough to have a two year old. This adds weight to Frank being the 14th child, as it removes the need to explain why it wasn't 15.

after Banns, both signed, witnesses John Martin and Anna Louisa Bartholomew, both also signed.
Although there was an eight year gap between the twins, born in 1901, and Doreen, born in 1908, the 1911 census shows that George and Eliza had only had the 3 children, all still living.
Several Martins with mother's maiden name of Johnson born in W Ashford RD 1913 on, but with the first q2 1913, and George and Daisy having had a daughter whose birth was registered in q4 1912 I think the W Ashford family were probably a different one.
