  	Censuses usually list children in birth order, but where do step-children fit? It varies, often they are put in the birth order position, but sometimes after the biological children of the head of household. When I saw the 1891 census I was sorry for John - listed after his younger half brothers and as a Sandercock, it appeared he may not have been treated as fully part of the family. However, it was quite different in 1901; here he was listed first and as a Uren. It seems he was now part of the family! Better evidence of his step-father's acceptance of him as though his own perhaps comes next. Even when listed with their step-father's surname in censuses step-children often marry with their birth name and use it subsequently. However, John unusually was recorded with both surnames when he married (though only Henry as his middle name). The 1911 census confirms that this John was born in Launceston, and there was noone else who it could be. After this there is no further sign of John (Shepton/Henry) Sandercock. I am highly confident that the two are the same so have combined them here (though if I were descended from him and going to be tracing his ancestors as mine I would buy cert(s) to check - the birth cert should show if the dob of JSS matches that of JHU, and it would be interesting to see if he named William Henry Uren as his father when he married and how the two names are shown).

  	At the time of the census John was in Wadebridge, although his wife and baby daughter were in Launceston. She was shown as 'wife' rather than 'head', suggesting they had not split up. They clearly did get back together, maybe John was just in Wadebridge for work, but it was not until 1915, over four years after their first, that they had another child although after that they mostly followed every other year.
