Was Mary Ann the daughter of the Grace shown here?
See research note attached to her mother re the two Grace Lavers in the area at the time. Which was the mother of Mary Ann?
I am sure it was the Grace shown, firstly given Mary's birth being in Dodbrooke. Even if the other Grace, born in West Alvington, had become pregnant while living in Dodbrooke she would probably have had the child in West Alvington (she was living with her parents at the time of the 1861 census, with no daughter present).
Yet Mary Ann was still living.
I have not found Mary Ann or her mother in the 1861 census, either with the surname Laver(s) or Taylor, however a Mary Ann Lavers of the right age was with William Taylor, brother of the Grace shown here in 1871, shown as his niece. This is the clincher for which Grace was her mother.
Baptised 1 Jan 1860 St. Thomas à Becket Church, Dodbrooke, Devon, England
- From m/f of Dodbrooke baptism
"Jany 1st [yr in margin: 1860] / Born Feby 7th 1859 No. 1155. Mary Ann dr of Grace Lavers, abode: Dodbrooke, [father's occupation column left blank], ceremony performed by James Dewing Rector"
Gender Female Residence 1871 Dodbrooke, Devon, England
- With her uncle William and his family at the time of the census.
Possibly misrecorded as Mary Ann Tucker in the 1861 census, as there is a 2 year old with this name, born Dodbrook, described as niece to William Tucker and his wife Susan. (Actually Susan was the great aunt of Mary Ann Lavers)
