Education 14 Aug 1841 Application approved - engagement letter sent - A letter sent to John senior to tell him that his son had been selected to be admitted to the lower school, requesting him to sign an agreement that if John was admitted he would be at the disposal of the Authorities "to serve in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, or the Merchant Service, if considered expedient". However, in the two years that had elapsed since the application had been made, John had died and Sarah, his mother, had become his sole guardian, so it was she who made her mark on the form.

Education From 3 Sep 1841 Greenwich, Kent, England
Greenwich Hospital School - John was admitted to the School in 1841, i.e. the year after his father drowned, though this was chance.
National Archives catalogue entry.
Greenwich Hospital School, now known as the Royal Hospital School, was originally located at Greenwich Hospital, based in what is now the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. The Hospital was founded in 1694, and the school in 1712, both by Royal Charter. The original purpose of the school was to provide assistance and education to the orphans of seafarers in the Royal and Merchant Navies, and it was once the largest school for navigation and seamanship in the country. Until the 1950s, boys of the school were also required to join the Royal or Merchant Navies, and the school uniform is naval.
Occupation From 1845 to 1854 Mariner - John first went to sea as a Cabin Boy in the Merchant Navy in 1845, getting his ticket in the same year. Despite having been in the RN School his ticket shows he had not served in the Royal Navy.
The ticket shows voyages for 1845-7.
Another ticket (less details, but showing age as 24 and birthplace as Dartmouth, and so agreeing with it being this John Bellett) shows his voyages in 1854.
