    Notes
    • (Research):Where was George born?
George (and his wife?) appear to have moved to Woodhorn perhaps on marriage, probably before starting their family (there are no children born elsewhere mentioned in Ann's will), and there is no very obvious clue as to where they were from.
My query regarding Ann does not mean I think she lived elsewhere - just that she could have been from Woodhorn, and it may only be George who had moved there (there seem to be no earlier 'Shells' in the parish).
The name 'Burlison', given to their eldest son, presumably started as a family surname, and may give a clue. It could, though, be on Anne's side (possibly her maiden name) rather than George's.

Will-leaving Shells are mainly found in Berwick (50 miles from Woodhorn) and Alnwick (20 miles away) - both to the north of Woodhorn
By contrast, Burlison appears to be a name found more in Co. Durham than Northumberland, and so not surprisingly most Burlisons are to be found in the south of the county, particularly in Newcastle and Ponteland. However, the name is also recorded as Berletson, and there were already Birletsons in Woodhorne. My guess would be that either George or Anne inherited property from Birletson relations in Woodhorne, and that is where they settled. This would explain the choice of the surname as a Christian name for their eldest son.

The only real clue I have as to where George may have been born is found is in the will of George's son George. His estate was to descend to his nephew Ralph (son of Burlison) and his heirs, but if Ralph's line failed then to John Shell of Dennick. Denwick is just outside of Alnwick and a Cuthbert of Denwick left a will in 1701, mentioning sons George and William, both of whom had sons John. One died in infancy, the other survived and would seem to be the 'John of Dennick' referred to by George in his will.
I thought perhaps Cuthbert had lived to a good age and was the father of this George senior, but his son George seems to have been baptised in 1669 i.e. it seems more likely Cuthbert was the same generation as George senior. It seems very unlikely Cuthbert was this George's father but maybe he was George's brother? That would mean George junior was leaving his property to his 1st cousin's son, should his nephew's line fail. With no son of his own and apparently no other nephew a 1st cousin's line would seem the most likely choice.
