Christopher BEDLAKE
Set As Default Person -
Name Christopher BEDLAKE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1590 - Based on date of first marriage. No evidence of earlier Bedlakes in Kent found, but given the date there could well have been some for whom no readily accessible index entries exist.
Either way, Bedlake was clearly an extremely rare name in Kent, and it seems probable that Christopher or one of his ancestors came from Devon and settled in Kent, probably being a mariner.
A Christopher was baptised in Barnstaple in 1593, who could be this Christopher.
There is no obvious further evidence for him in Devon, but given the poor survival of early PRs in Devon he could well have reamained in Devon but events were in a parish with no surviving PRs from the time, or he could like so many have drowned at sea as a young man and so left no marriage or burial record.
The burial of Mary in 1646 may suggest it was not Christopher but his father or an earlier Bedlake who came from Devon. It seems less likely that a woman would make the move, and so how did Mary come to be in Kent if it was Christopher who migrated from Devon to Kent?
In addition, Christopher's will shows he was a tailor, not a mariner.
Gender Male Occupation From 1636 to 1653 Tailor - Recorded when he provided the bond for a marriage in 1636 (William Cock, sailor of Deal to Alice Peeke, widow of John Peeke) and also when he wrote his will
