Hercules HILLS, [Father?]
Set As Default Person -
Name Hercules HILLS Suffix [ONS gp] [Father?] Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1552 - From date of baptism of first known child.
Although this estimate is before the start of Boughton under Blean PRs or ATs / BTs, and before those for most parishes, the estimates of dobs for his siblings Susan and Michael, based on their dates of marriage, are in the 1560s, and with many PRs surviving from 1558 and ATs from 1560 the chance of finding them seemed much greater.
There are no baptisms for them in Boughton, and looking a little further afield the only Susan I could find that might be his sister was one baptised in Leaveland and the only Michael was also in Leaveland.
It would be a bit of a coincidence if these are not Hercules' siblings; hence I think it highly likely though it is not certain.
(n.b. Due to the rarity of Susan's married surname, and it being recorded in Hercules' will, I am sure I have the right marriage for her. Unfortunately the Michael was a popular name amongst HILLS families at the time, so it is possible the marriage on which I am basing my estimate of the dob of this brother of Hercules is that of the wrong Michael. Also, Susan's children put a further limit on when she may have been born; even with the right marriage for Michael there is of course no such limitation).

Father William HILLS, [Children?], b. Est 1520, bur. 29 Feb 1587/88, Ss. Peter and Paul’s Church, Boughton under Blean, Kent, England
(Age ~ 68 years) Married - Although I do not know for certain their parents names, four can be identified as siblings due to Hercules leaving small bequests to a sister and 2 brothers in his will (i.e. William, Susan, Hercules and Michael are siblings).
Baptisms in Leaveland of a Susan and Michael who seem likely to be Hercules siblings with these names suggest that others baptised there around the same time (1561/2 to 1570) were also his siblings.
The baptisms in this register do not show a father's name until 1570. Michael's baptism and that of Peter are the only two to name their father: Wilyam. From the spacing of the children it appears there was just the one Hills couple having children in the parish at this time, so it is probable that the others were also children of William.
The tiny size of the parish also make this likely; there may well have been close Hills relations living nearby but they could well be over the parish border.
The register is like so many that were transcribed at the end of the C16th. It says at the start:
"The Register book of the Parish of Leaveland of Christenings weddings and burialls from the yere of or Lord God 1553 truely copied out of the old book the first day of June 1598".
Despite the stated start date of 1553 no baptism is recorded until 1556. In the period covered by the first 2 pages, 1556 to 1587, most years have one to 4 baptisms, yet just 3 are recorded before 1563 and none in 1575-1577. It seems unlikely this is due to chance; maybe records were badly kept for these years or entries in these time periods may have faded or rotted away before the transcribing was done.
FamilySearch does not have any others, but checking the film nos. of the entries it has they all seem to be from the PRs, not ATs.
The missing children, if this was Hercules' family, i.e. Hercules and William, possibly Gabriel, and possibly others currently unknown / uncertain, could have been born before 1553 or 6, or possibly in one of the gaps.
Two other possible children of William are Lucy and Frances, who married in / from Leaveland 1577/8 - 1601.
Since the surviving ATs date from 1563 it should be possible to check to see if they have any other baptisms.
The fact that Gabriel and possibly others from the Leaveland register are not mentioned may mean Gabriel was more distantly related and the others may have died.
If the Leaveland family is not Hercules' family, there could well have been more siblings than the 3 mentioned in Hercules' will and the possible brother Gabriel.

Family Joan MURTON, b. Est 1554, bur. 21 Sep 1631, Ss. Peter and Paul’s Church, Boughton under Blean, Kent, England
(Age ~ 77 years)
Other Partners: Laurence BROOKE m. 26 Jan 1595/96; Edmund GOFFE m. 26 Jan 1606/07; Nicholas JUCE m. 20 Jan 1611/12Married Bef 1580 - Estimate of date assumes all Hercules' children were Joan's. If Mary wasn't then they must have married about 1581.
Hercules' wife at the time of his death was Joan; whether she was the mother of all of his children I am not certain, although her children named in her father's will shows that at least all from Augustine on were - i.e. all those known of except Mary (each was to receive 40 shillings). By contrast Hercules' daughter Mary (unlike the others not described as Joan's daughter, but simply as the wife of Laurence Juce was only to receive 10 shillings). Augustine Murton's Godchildren did include Augustine Tilson, one of this Mary's sons by her first marriage. If Mary had lost her mother early in life I guess that Joan and Joan's father could have played a big enough part in Mary's life for her to choose her step-grandfather as a Godfather for her son and (as seems to have been the norm) to have given her son the name of a Godparent, in this case Augustine. Mary had married by the time the will was written, and she may well have received less because her grandfather had given her her portion at the time of her marriage, though two of Joan's three sons had also married before the will was written.
Boughton under Blean marriages in the PRs survive from 1558; the fact that Hercules and Joan's is not there suggests they probably married elsewhere, although it could have been accidentally omitted. If Hercules had been married before the PRs could also be expected to have his previous marriage, unless that too were elsewhere, and his first wife's burial - could have been elsewhere but less likely. No Hills were buried between the baptism of Hercules' children Mary and Augustine, further suggesting that Mary was Joan's daughter.
