Will 29 Jan 1682/83 Written Military Service Aft 1683 In the Royal Navy, served on the 'English Ruby' - In the latter half of the C17th there were two ships called Ruby: one built in Deptford for the Royal Navy, the 'English Ruby', the other captured from the French, the 'French Ruby'.
The entries on Discovery regarding this ship vary in whether she is referred to as the Ruby or English Ruby. All the musters and pay books simply call her the Ruby.
(Discovering from the probate statement for Gabriel's will the name of the ship on which he had served, 'English Ruby', it quickly became clear from the ADM records that she was a Royal Navy ship, and yet unlike any other ship on which I'd found a relation served there were no pay books or musters. When I realised the 'Ruby' was the same ship it all became clear).
Buried 1 Jun 1689 St. Mary’s Church, Alverstoke, Hampshire, England - I suspect the 'Gaberal Hills' buried in Alverstoke in 1689 was this Gabriel. At the time the parish included Gosport, which was a place involved with the Royal Navy base at Portsmouth.

Probate 4 Dec 1689 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, England - Gabriel named his mother to be executrix of his estate, but she passed the task over to her son Augustine.

The date and the bride being a Thomasin makes it likely to be the marriage of this John. The reason for it being in Canterbury is unclear, maybe Thomasin was from Canterbury. The functions of Bishop, Archdeacons etc. had been suspended and there were no marriage licences at this time so the usual reason for a marriage in Canterbury was not the case.
The will of John and Thomazin's son Gabriel show his home as being in Ramsgate. As a young unmarried man this was almost certainly with his mother and siblings.
Ramsgate was a fishing village; hence it seems probable that his father had been a fisherman or mariner of some sort, and it is likely his brothers were too. Gabriel may not have been the only Hills to lose his life at sea. It may explain why no burial record has been found for his father and some or even all of his brothers.
