  Proof Argument	That Fanny was the Frances PERRING baptised in Dittisham in 1777
  - At the time of writing (7 Oct 2015, and still the case on 3 Aug 2021) the only baptism I can find of a Fanny / Frances Perrin(g) in Devon, using online indexed resources, is that of a Frances Perring, baptised 2 July 1777 in Dittisham, daughter of Richard and Frances. - 1777 would seem a more likely date of birth than 1771 (the date suggested by age recorded at death), given the year her last child was born 1818 (although a 1771 birth would not be impossible for that). - I can find no other likely marriage or burial for the Dittisham Frances (a burial of a Frances at Dittisham in 1792 I think is probably the mother of the Frances baptised there). - A child of Frances and William Gotham was named Richard Perring GOTHAM. Whilst the use of a mother's maiden surname as a middle name is not always with the Christian name of the child's mother or one of her parents, it very often is, so Richard is a particularly likely Christian name for Fanny's father. - From all the above it does appear to me probable that Fanny was baptised in 1777, and with no date of birth in the register almost certainly also born about 1777 (before the start of separate birth registration in 1837 baptism registers were used to provide evidence of someone's age, so a birth date or a child's age was generally included where the baptism was not of a young infant).

  	** Possibly ** this death GRO ref: Gothem, Fanny q2 1855 Newton A RD 5b 108; GRO online index shows age at death as 84 It did seem probable that this was the death of this Fanny, despite the age difference with the dob suggested by the baptism that is probably hers. However, having obtained a copy of her death certificate I have found that she is recorded there as the widow of a 'Thomas Gothem, Sailor'. There is a Thomas of a similar age to Fanny - assuming the age on the death certificate is accurate: the Thomas baptised in 1765. Was she his widow? I believe he died aged 30; his father was a mariner and so it is probable that he was a sailor. Baptised and buried in West Teignmouth, it is likely that is where his widow would have lived. However, the informant for Fanny's death was a workhouse employee, not a family member, and so the details, which can never be relied on to be entirely accurate, are probably more at risk of being in error than ususal. Given that the burial register shows her abode as 'West Teignmouth', despite the workhouse being in Newton Abbot, it suggests Fanny may not have been there very long. Finding her in the censuses, particularly 1851 for the birthplace, is a priority. (If the above death in 1855 is the death of Fanny widow of Thomas then I am not only missing the burial of this Fanny - she could have died before July 1837 so I need not be missing a death registration too, but also the marriage of Thomas to Fanny; hence I still think it most likely that the death is of this Fanny and the wrong name recorded for her husband).
