Ann GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Ann GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 6 Dec 1801 Devon, England
- Shown as aged 40 in the 1841 census - rounded down age, implying born -1796-1801.
Actual date from baptism register.
Baptised 25 Dec 1801 St. Michael the Archangel’s Church, East Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Dec 2018)
"[Born] Dec the 6th Ann the Daughter of William & Fanny Gotham [Baptized] [Dec] the 25th"
Gender Female Residence 1841 West Cliff, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- With her husband, 5 sons (William, James, Joseph, John and George; while no relationships shown the gaps between them suggest they were all theirs) and a '70' year old James Potter - maybe father-in-law, shown as a paper maker.
Residence 1861 Mulberry Street, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- Ann was living with her husband and daughter Mary Ann
Died 1 Jun 1880 Albion Place, Teign Street, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
Cause: Senile decay - In the census with her husband and daughter Mary Ann
I cannot find any of them in 1881 or later censuses; this is probably Ann's death:
GRO ref: POTTER, Ann q2 1880 aged 83 Newton A. RD 5b 87
Details from death register entry (GRO copy) where shown as the widow of William Potter, General Labourer.
The informant was Anna Craze, present at the death, who was resident in Albion Place. She was also the informant for the death of Ann's husband a few months before. Was she a neighbour or was she a nurse taking care of Ann and William? The year after the deaths in the census Anna Craze was living with her husband and son in Albion Place. While Willian and Ann could have been lodging with the Crazes I suspect they were neighbours and Anna was (officially i.e. paid or unofficially) helping out.
Although the age is not right, it is similar to a discrepancy in the 1871 census, in which Ann is shown as aged 73. It is just possible that William had been widowed and remarried to another, older Ann, but this seems unlikely; I can find no death registration to fit, plus the age was almost correct in the 1861 census (60, though should have been 59) and the Ann(s) were described as 'nurse' in both censuses. I think it was the same Ann in each.

I guess they may have got a licence to marry as quickly as they could, as the birth of their first child seemed imminent; she was born the day after the wedding!

At present I am guessing James is a child of this marriage based on his middle name and date and place of birth.
