William POTTER
Set As Default Person -
Name William POTTER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1800 Moretonhampstead, Devon, England
- from 1841 census where shown as aged 40, 1861 where shown as 60 and 1871 where shown as aged 70
Gender Male Occupation Lighterman - According to his son Jospeh's marriage register entry
Occupation 1841 Labourer - from the census; also shown as a labourer in the 1871 census
Occupation 1861 Gardener - From the census
Died 12 Feb 1880 Albion Place, Teign Street, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
Cause: Cerebral hæmorrhage - After 1871, since in the census with his wife and daughter Mary Ann
I cannot find any of them in 1881 or later censuses; and this would seem to be this William's death (the fact the informant and place was the same as for the Ann Potter who died a few months later, and was shown as the widow of William Potter, indicates the deaths were of a couple William and Ann and I don't believe there was another couple in Teignmouth so named):
GRO ref: POTTER, William q1 1880 aged 78 Newton A. RD 5b 93
Details from death register entry (GRO copy)
The informant was Anna Craze, present at the death, who was resident in Albion Place. She was also the informant for the death of William's wife a few months later. Was she a neighbour or was she a nurse taking care of Ann and William? The year after the deaths in the census Anna Craze was living with her husband and son in Albion Place. While Willian and Ann could have been lodging with the Crazes I suspect they were neighbours and Anna was (officially i.e. paid or unofficially) helping out.
