Notes - (Research):I was seeking to find out whether the Caroline who married in Exeter in 1770 was the one baptised in Bridestowe in 1747. She was the right sort of age to marry and there seemed to be no marriage or burial of a Caroline near Bridestowe, nor the baptism of a Caroline in or near Exeter. With her father a priest she would be more likely to have friends in Exeter or other reasons to visit the city than, say, a labourer's daughter. But even so, Bridestowe is about 30 miles from Exeter so it would be unsafe to assume it was the right one.
I hoped the burial register would show her age and so looked* for the burial of a Caroline Baynard in Exeter. None. Searched all of Devon. Still none. Perhaps they had left the county? There was, though, the marriage of a Caroline Baynard in Plymouth in 1785. Checking the PR page it showed she was a widow. It looked like she might have left Exeter for Plymouth - any evidence of this?
I looked for baptisms of Baynards in Devon within 20 years of her first marriage. There were surprisingly few, mostly in Plymouth, and several of them were for children of a William and Caroline. What's more, one had the middle name Gotham. I think this confirms this is the William and Caroline who married in Exeter, but does not yet confirm the Exeter/Plymouth Caroline was the one baptised in Bridestowe.
With the children showing William and Caroline had settled in Plymouth, no evidence of other widows Caroline Baynard, and the last child of William and Caroline baptised in 1782 I think it safe to assume it was this Caroline who married John Chubb. I looked for the burial of a Caroline Chubb. I didn't restrict my search to Plymouth but all of Devon; again I was surprised by how few results there were. Just one where the age shows born in the C18th, none where the lack of an age means could have been who didn't have a middle name. And that one had her age recorded as 72 in 1819, i.e. was born in 1746 or 7.
I think I have confirmed that the Exeter and Plymouth Caroilne is the Bridestowe one.
One final thing, I would like to compare the signatures of Caroline on the 2 marriage PR entries, but at the time of researching this the Exeter marriage was not online with an image, just the banns (it's on my 'to do' list).
I would also like to have 'killed off' Caroline's first husband (i.e. found his burial or something else relating to his death). There are a number of reasons why I may have not been able to find his burial. I think the most likely is that he was a mariner or otherwise ventured across the seas and died at sea or abroad.
* when I refer to looking in these notes I am talking about searching the PR entries as indexed on FMP on 9 July 2014. These include most but not all of the parishes whose registers are held at the Devon Heritage Centre or Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, but not those held in North Devon.
