Thomas GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 28 Apr 1799 Teignmouth, Devon, England
- Date from baptism register, place from the 1861 and 1871 censuses
Baptised 1 May 1799 St. Michael’s Church, Kingsteignton, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 27 Oct 2017)
"Thomas Son of Nathan & Elizabeth Gothem of Teingmouth Baptized May - 1 1799"
Gender Male Baptism Ceremony 17 Oct 1799 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- Having already been baptised in May, Thomas could not be baptised again but for some reason he appears to have gone through another baptism ceremony! The first ceremony was only 3 days after his birth - possibly he was baptized privately as his survival was in doubt, and this second ceremony was actually his being received into the church.

Occupation 1824 Mariner - Recorded as such at the time of his marriage; the newspaper announcement indicates he was a ship's captain.
Military Service to 7 Jul 1830 Served on H.M.S. Sybille - Muster rolls for H.M.S. Dispatch show that Thomas had previously served on Sybille, his no. on that ship being 54, and he was discharged from it on 7 July 1830.
(I will be looking at muster rolls etc. for the Sybille to learn more about his service on that ship - and it may lead me to an earlier ship he was on)
Military Service From 27 Aug 1830 to 6 Feb 1832 Able Seaman on H.M.S. Dispatch - From allotment papers and musters. The whole crew seem to have been paid off in Chatham in 1832, the last muster recorded being on the 6 February.
Military Service 6 Feb 1832 Chatham, Kent, England
Paid off from H.M.S. Dispatch Occupation From 1854 to 1856 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Mariner - In 1854 and 1856 Thomas was on voyages from Glasgow
Occupation 1856 Greenock, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Mariner - Thomas was on a voyage from Greenock
Visiting 1861 New House, Ashcombe, Devon, England
- A visitor in the farm house of bachelor, 35 year old Dawlish-born William H. Bussell, with 6 servants also present, i.e. a housekeeper, domestic servant, carter and 3 farm servants. Although shown as a visitor (rather than a relationship to the head of the household being shown) I believe Thomas was William Bussell's uncle, i.e. William was the son of Thomas's sister Elizabeth.
Poor Law 1871 The Union Workhouse, Newton Abbot, Devon, England
Resident in the workhouse - Thomas was living in the workhouse by the time of the census, shown as a Pauper, widower, a sailor, born Teignmouth. His age is unclear (one of the crosses put on the census pages when they were processed completely obliterated the first digit, the second was 1)
(information about Newton Abbot workhouse can be found here on the workhouse website)
Died 13 Jun 1871 The Union Workhouse, Newton Abbot, Devon, England
[1] Cause: Seizure - Abode from burial register
GRO ref: GOTHAM, Thomas aged 71 q2 1871 Newton Abbot RD 5b 103
Death cert. shows that Thomas died in the Union Workhouse, and describes him as a 'Saiolor'. The informant was Ann Mance, in attendance, and resident in the Union Workhouse.
Buried 17 Jun 1871 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England

Siblings3 brothers and 2 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
Andrew GOTHAM, b. Est 1585, (probably), Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
, bur. 10 Mar 1673/74, St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England
(Age ~ 89 years) (4 x Great Grandfather)
Joan, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)
Notes - Although made his mark on the RN allotment paperwork, he had signed the register when he married so was able to read and write.
- (Research):The Thomas Gotham who married Prudence Walker was shown as 'of Teignmouth', the Thomas born in Teignmouth in 1799 was shown as a widower and a former merchant seaman / sailor in the censuses of 1861 and 1871, hence the two would seem probably to be one and the same.
Recorded as a Captain at the time of his marriage; whilst I would have thought 25 was a bit young for this the only other Teignmouth Thomas Gotham I am aware of who could have married Prudence was baptised in 1765. Marrying at 59 is not impossible. However, the Thomas who married Prudence was an Able Seaman the RN in 1830, and I don't think a 65 year old could have been.
More evidence is provided by his seaman's ticket.
Issued in Liverpool in 1844 it shows that a Thomas Gotham, born in Teignmouth on 28 April 1802, had served in the Royal Navy (for about 9 years). Although the birth year is wrong the date and month agree with the date in the baptism register; it looks like Thomas was making himself out to be 3 years younger. So the birth information point to the son of Nathaniel, while the RN and Liverpool link point to the husband of Prudence.
