Joseph Webber JACKSON
Set As Default Person -
Name Joseph Webber JACKSON Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1765 - Date from age at death, as in newspaper report.
Parents assumed from link to Moretonhampstead (indicated in Joseph's will) and middle name (in his death registration).
Baptised - Although there are Jackson marriages and burials in Moretonhampstead, there seems to be a dearth of baptisms - probably because they were a Baptist family (see general notes).
Gender Male Will 7 Feb 1824 Written - (1824 may look like a typo for 1842, but it is not. Joseph did write his will many years before his death, when his wife Elizabeth was still living and before his daughter Ann married; the grant of admon noted that Elizabeth subsequently died in his lifetime and notes Ann's married name).
Died 12 Feb 1842 Highgate, London, England
- From newspaper reports.
In the deaths column of the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle of 21 Feb 1842,
"At Highgate, Joseph Jackson, Esq., formerly of Plymouth, aged 78." [second digit of age unclear, appears to be 8 but not certain]
In the deaths column of Wollmer's Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of 19 Feb 1842,
"Feb. 12, at Highgate, deeply lamented, Joseph Jackson, Esq., aged 76, formerly of George-street, Plymouth"
GRO ref: JACKSON, Joseph Webber q1 1842 Islington RD 3 163; GRO online index shows age at death as 76
Administration with Will 11 Oct 1842 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, England
Patriarch & Matriarch
Notes - (Research):Joseph's Family
I believe Joseph was from a Baptist family, that and the loss of so many Devon probate documents makes it hard to be sure of who Joseph's parents and siblings were.
The two important clues we have are the mention of property in Moretonhampstead in his will and the middle name of Webber - and we seem to be lucky to have these.
Property in Moretonhampstead
The mention of property in Moretonhampstead in Joseph's will suggest he may have been from there. He married Elizabeth as a bachelor and was at that time 'of' the parish in which they married, St. Saviour's Dartmouth, so there is no clue there and both witnesses were members of Elizabeth's family. Later they lived in Plymouth. This mention of Moretonhampstead is all that is obvious to go on.
Despite mentioning property in Moretonhampstead in his will, Joseph is not named in the tithe appportionment list (on the FODA website), but a John and a Jabez Jackson are.
The property mentioned in the will is 'North and South Halcomb', and the tithe listing shows about 8 acres named as 'Halscombe', owned by Jabez.
Although Joseph died after the tithe assessment, he had written his will about 18 years before his death, about 14 years before the tithe assessment, and so there was plenty of time for him to have given or sold his interest in Halcomb.
I think Jabez is quite likely a brother or (more likely) nephew of Joseph but could be a cousin of some sort.
Middle name - Webber
n.b. the only place I have found the middle name is in the death registration. It seems probable it is the right registration - the date, place and age are consistant with the newspaper report of his death (no other registration is close to fitting), the date also agrees with his will. I find it odd, though, that his middle name is not in his marriage record, the report of his death or even his will.
It is, however, consistent with what I guess to be his family.
In Moretonhampstead a James Jackson married a Mary Webber in 1755; it seems probable these were Joseph's parents.
