    Died Bef 1667
    • No burial in Ugborough PRs 25 Nov 1648 until 17 Oct 1653 (from 25 Sep from cmts at top of page)
Samuel could have died in in this period, or not yet found due to atrociously inaccurate transcription of the entries for this parish on FMP. Seems not to be in the protestation oath which may suggest he had died by 1641.

    Patriarch & Matriarch
Thomas GOTHAM,   b. Est 1550,   d. Yes, date unknown  (Father)

    Notes
    • (Research):It seems likely that the Samuel who named a daughter Agnes in Ugbrough in 1623 was the brother of the Agnes who was married in the same Parish in 1601; if he wasn't the brother he was almost certainly a close relation.

A Samuel was baptised in Wolborough in 1592, son of Thomas; was that this Samuel? Did the whole family move to Ugborough? (Ugborough is about half way between Wolborough [Newton Abbot] and Plymouth, about 18 miles to both)

Alternatively, a Thomas Gotham had sons Thomas and Samuel baptised in Stokeinteignhead in 1588 and 1592 respectively; were these this Samuel and the Thomas who died in Ugborough? (Stokeinteignhead is about 20 miles from Ugborough)
Ugborough PRs survive from the start in 1538, and according to Phillimore's Atlas are on the IGI (now FamilySearch) from then. This should mean Samuel's baptism should be on FS if it took place at Ugborough. However, my experience of records of this age is that they usually have some damage and / or fading and not all entries will be legible. It is important to see the register (images of it) before discounting the possibility that Samuel was born and bred in the parish.

    • I am showing a family here which may be more than one merged.
Matthew, Petronella and John make sense as siblings, being baptised in Torbryan in 1580-1585, a parish with no other Gotham events until over a hundred years later.
Given there are no further events at Torbryan, it appears that the family left that parish, and the baptisms of Thomas and Samuel in Wolborough follow on nicely.
Because a Thomas and Samuel, as well as an Agnes, are then found in Ugborough it appears at least some of the family then moved there. I am guessing that Agnes who married there was the sister of Thomas and Samuel, though she could have been their mother, remarrying.

I did think that Thomas the father of Samuel and Thomas was probably the son of William and Joan, baptised in Stokeinteignhead in 1568, especially as he had had a brother Samuel, but this would mean he had married at an unusually young age, and as there were two Thomases of his age in Combeinteignhead, a neighbouring parish to Stokeinteignhead, at the time of the maritime survey of 1619, it now seems more likely that one of them could have been that Thomas.
