James SOUTHARD
Set As Default Person -
Name James SOUTHARD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born - From the 1850 census where shown as aged 76 born between 12 Sep 1773 or 11 Sep 1774.
Baptised 27 Dec 1773 Ss. Peter Paul and Thomas’ of Canterbury Church, Bovey Tracey, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 28 Apr 2017)
"James the Son of William Sallard was Baptized the 27. of December"
Although this says 'Sallard' rather than 'Southard' I think it is this James as the location is suitable, the age is right and there is no sign of a baptism of a James South(w)ard. In addition, looking for other CMB events for the name Sallard, as in the FMP index (28 Apr 2017) for all of Devon there is only one other, the baptism of a Samuel who appears to be the brother of James. It does therefore seem safe to assume that 'Sallard' is a mistake for / variant of another name. The error may have occurred in writing up the register from notes. There are two records for the baptism of Samuel, one on a partially surviving scrap, bound in the front of the register where the suname is recorded as Southward, the other in the main part of the register where it is Sallard.
It seems safe to assume that James was the son of William and Margery. Not only can I find no other baptism of a suitable James, but the names James gave his five sons are the same of those of the brothers and half-brothers of James, the son of William and Margery.

A William and Ann Southard had four children baptised in Ilsington, 1760-1766. It appears that William was older than most at first marriage when he married Margery, so I suspect it may have been the same William remarrying.
