    Notes
    • I think it likely that this John was the one who settled in Marylebone, though Marylebone John could have been the John baptised in West Teignmouth in 1755 (or another I have not identified).

It was a likely place for a mariner to move to, but both Topsham and Teignmouth had many mariners. This John's father and Gotham grandfather were both mariners, so he could well have been one as well.
However, the Quarter Sessions show that in 1774 one John Cooke of Topsham was accused of assualting one John Gotham, and a John Gotham and John Manley of assaulting John Cooke! All 3 were helliers (i.e. roofers), not mariners. This John seems a likely one to have been the one in those incidents. Perhaps, though, it was this John but he went because he heard from the mariners of all the building work going on in London and fancied his chance there.

"Jan the 30th. were Marryed John Gotham & Sarah Puddicm."

It would seem highly probable that this was the same John and Sarah who subsequently had children baptised in Topsham and Littleham, John no doubt moving due to his work. Such movement was quite common; possibly John felt his job opportunities were better based on the Exe.

There is a surprising long gap between the marriage and first child. I have browsed the Littleham and Topsham registers for this period; there are no other children that could be theirs. Possibly the gap due to John being away from home much of the time on long voyages, but looking at St. Marychurch register some pages are not intact and for the odd entry the crucial information may be missing. There is one entry in 1750/1:
"Jan 3 was [Bap]tized Mary the daughter of John [missing]" - could this be a daughter of John and Sarah?
