This John may well have been the John who was baptised in the neighbouring parish of Ashburton in 1670. However, the possibility of missing PR entries for this times makes me cautious about assuming a link.
I would like to know, though, why he called his oldest son 'Hugh'. I know of no earlier Hughs, which might give a clue to the group John belongs to, or finding that e.g. his wife had a father named Hugh would at least mean the absence of a Hugh in the Ashburton group is not a barrier to him belonging to that group.
