John GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name John GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 12 Jan 1822 (probably), Marylebone, London, England
- From Baptism Register
Baptised 3 Feb 1822 St. Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England
[1] Gender Male Apprenticeship 6 Nov 1835 London, England
Merchant Seaman - ** I'm not sure the apprenticeship was of this John. **
He was a couple of months short of 14 at the time of indenture. I have found no other record of this John - possibly because he died at sea or overseas. But it could be that this John died in infancy and I've simply not yet found the burial. His brother William was a mariner so it is quite likely that if he survived he would also have been a mariner.
If it was not this John, the apprentice may have been the John born in 1818, but that would make the age 3 years out; also, I haven't seen any apprenticeships starting when the apprentice was 17, 14 - 16 was the usual range, with 16 very common, so 17 seems possible. There is other convincing evidence that this other John was a mariner.
