Andrew GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Andrew GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born - I was looking for the baptism of an Andrew born c. 1700, which I guessed would be when the Andrew who married Hannah nee Rakestraw was born. However, since I can find a baptism for other children of Andrew and there only seems to be the one burial, I now think it was this Andrew, not a son with the name, who married Hannah.
Baptised 3 May 1669 Ss. Martin and Mary’s Church, Chudleigh, Devon, England

"Andrew s. of Will Goteham & Elizabeth bapt. 3 May"
Gender Male Civic Office 1720 Portreeve of Chudleigh Oath 12 Jul 1720 The Castle, Exeter, Devon, England
According to 1715 Oath Act - In 1715 George I was on the throne, but twenty seven years after the Glorious Revolution there were still mixed opinions about who the monarch should be, with several attempts to return the throne to the Stuarts.
One of the main "risings" was in 1715 (Wikipedia article), and in these tense times in 1715 there was an Oath Act "'for the further security of his majesty's person". This required the holders of certain public offices to take the oaths of allegiance, supremacy and abjuration as defined in the Act.
In 1720 when portreeve of Chudleigh Andrew swore the Oaths at Exeter Castle before Thomas Putt bart and Bampfield Rodd
The oath included a declaration against transubstantiation.

Residence 1739 Chudleigh, Devon - "of Chudleigh" when his step-son became an apprentice - I think. Else of Dawlish - the catalogue entry shows for Andrew and his wife "both of the same", but does this mean the same as his step-son or of the Master?

Father William GOTHAM, bap. 29 May 1628, St. Mary’s Church, Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
, bur. 8 Sep 1701, Ss. Martin and Mary’s Church, Chudleigh, Devon, England
(Age ~ 73 years)
Other Partners: JoaneMother Elizabeth, b. Est 1645, bur. 25 Aug 1728, Ss. Martin and Mary’s Church, Chudleigh, Devon, England
(Age ~ 83 years) Married Between 1666 and 1669 - If I am right that the same William married first Joane then Elizabeth, then (given that his last child with Joane would almost certainly have been baptised when very young, probably just a few days) then he must have married Elizabeth between 1666 when that last child was baptised and 1669, when his first child with Elizaebth was baptised.

Family 2 Hannah RAKESTRAW, b. Est 1700, bur. 29 Jun 1772, Ss. Martin and Mary’s Church, Chudleigh, Devon, England
(Age ~ 72 years)
Other Partners: Samuel COYLE m. 29 Jun 1725; Robert BASSETT m. 5 Jun 1742Married 25 Feb 1735/36 Ss. Martin and Mary’s Church, Chudleigh, Devon, England
- His step-son William was apprenticed in 1739. Quarter Sessions material shows Andrew and his wife giving consent - I think this implies it was a parish apprenticeship. William was probably aged between 9 and 14; Andrew's wife Hanah must have married Andrew after her first husband died or after the birth of an illegitimate son, so no earlier than 1725.
