    • There is no sign of a baptism of a Mary George JONES anywhere in the vicinity in any year which could mean she was the one who married John Thorne GOTHAM and then John BANFILL. There is also no Mary JONES who is a close fit; 3 were baptised within 10 miles of Wolborough and within 10 years of 1745: in Brixham in 1751, Harberton in 1753 and Kenton in 1755.
There is no sign of any other marriage or burial that could be those of the following Mary GEORGE, who is a good fit:

      "C[hristening] 19 Mary George a Bastard Child."

I cannot find a George = Jones marriage, but perhaps her mother married a Jones, and she took her father / step-father's surname. Or perhaps Mary was 'adopted' by a Jones family, or brought up by relatives with the surname Jones.

No other children of a John and Mary were baptised in Wolborough, 1774-1780, so it seems probable that they had only the one son.

This shows that the Mary who married John Banfill was a widow. She also used the unusual spelling Gottheam when she signed her surname, the spelling adopted by the family of William Gotham and Martha Beere, including by her first husband when he married her, suggesting she was, by marriage, part of that family.
Marriage was by licence, but licence not found in collection on FS (checked through those for July - Dec 1780)
