  • Name Sarah GOTHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born 8 Jun 1807
    • Date from baptism register.
Born about a year after banns were read for her mother's marriage to William Heath, who she does seem to have subsequently lived with, though possibly not married (certainly not by the time Sarah was born), it is not clear if William was Sarah's father, though it seems to me quite likely.
Baptised 18 Jun 1807  St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

"[Born] June the 8th / Sarah the Daughter of Mary Gotham B['ase' or 'astard'] / [Baptized] June the 18th"

This baptism is unusual in that it took place over seven months after her mother married - and yet Sarah is recorded as the illegitimate daughter of Mary, with no father named. Perhaps the date of birth shown is wrong, or the priest in Teignmouth did not believe Mary was married - as the marriage was in Exeter, not Teignmouth.

      "William Heath and Mary Gotham"
No parish shown in the banns register for either of the couple; was the priest just slack about recording the information (the name of the person who published the banns is also missing), or does this imply both were otp?
Married 27 Oct 1806  St. Thomas’s Church, Exeter, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Although there were banns of marriage for William and Mary in West Teignmouth in 1806, their marriage took place in Exeter a few months later, with both of them shown as of the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle.

Perhaps there was an impediment, hence marrying in a city parish, where they were not known.
An impediment could also explain why a daughter of Mary's (Sarah), shown in the register as born more than 7 months after the marriage, was recorded as a Gotham and illegitimate.

I show Mary's other daughter who was baptised as a Gotham as having a different father, but she could have been a daughter of William Heath.

Married 23 Aug 1829  St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

The transcribed data show the marriage was recorded as that of Sarah Gothem to George Thomas
      "George Thomas of the Parish
      of Plymouth - Mariner
and Sarah Gothen of this Parish
      Spinster
were married in thie Church by Licence with Consent of
Both of age this twenty third Day of
August in the Year One thousand eight hundred and twenty nine
By me Edmund Duncan Rhules - Curate
This Marriage was solemnized between us George Thomas, Sarah Gothem
In the Presence of Mary Heath, John Brien, G Daimond
      No. 264."

Mary Heath was probably Sarah's mother, though could have been her (half) sister, G Daimond was probably the Parish Clerk as he witnessed most marriages in West Teignmouth at this time, I don't know who John Brien was.

The date seems to be before that of the marriage licence, which clearly it can't have been, but from its position in the register I think the date of the licence is wrong - see notes attached to that event.
    Marriage License 21 Sep 1829
    • Shows that Geo. Thomas of Plymouth, mariner obtained a Licence for a marriage in the Church of W Teignmouth between him and Sarah Gothen, Spinster, making Oath that Sarah had her usual place of abode in the said Parish [West Teignmouth] for at least the past 15 days.
Clearly the date of marriage licence or marriage as I show them here has to be wrong. I thought the marriage might be meant to be 23 Sept, but looking in the register there are several recorded after it later in August and in September before 23rd, so it would seem that is correct.
The year on the marriage licence is not clear; there is a small circle with a blob of ink below, so it could be 1828 or 1829. While 1828 is a possibility, most did not leave it so long before marrying, so maybe the clerk who filled the form in entered the wrong month.
