Joseph Goatham POTTER, [G-D(AD)]
Set As Default Person -
Name Joseph Goatham POTTER Suffix [ONS gp] [G-D(AD)] Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1836 Devon, England
- From the 1841 census where shown as aged 4
Baptised 14 Aug 1836 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 12 Nov 2014)
Gender Male Middle name relationship Gotham: his mother's maiden name - The baptism entries for Joseph's three older brothers shows them all with the middle name Gotham, their mother's maiden name; the baptism and birth registration entries for his two younger brothers suggests they were not given the name as a middle name. The same seems to be true for Joseph - his entry in the baptism register shows his middle name as John, but maybe this was a mistake.
Alternatively, as four of his siblings had the middle name Gotham, perhaps his parents forgot they had given him John, and led him to believe his middle name was Gotham.
He married as Joseph Gotham POTTER, and this was the name with which his death was registered.
(The above assumes I am correct in deciding that Joseph John POTTER and Joseph Gotham POTTER were one and the same person - see his marriage notes for why I think they were. If I am wrong they must have been brothers, so the one with the middle name Gotham was still being given his mother's maiden name).
Also known as Joseph John POTTER Occupation 1882 Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand
Labourer - At the time of his marriage
Died 23 Jul 1897 New Zealand
- From NZ death registration index.
This records the death as of a Joseph Goatham POTTER, aged 55, i.e. the wrong middle name and 6 years too young. Joseph may have lied about his age due to marrying a younger wife, and the different middle name may be an error in the baptism register
Buried 25 Jul 1897 Northern Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand
- Buried in Block 92. Plot 22, his baby grandson subsequently being buried with him. The cemetery details show 'Marion Potter' as giving consent, presumably this was Mary Ann Potter, his grandmother.

Am I right to think that Joseph, shown at baptism as Joseph John POTTER was the Joseph Goatham POTTER who married in New Zealand in 1882?
From the marriage register entry the parents are right but the age is wrong. The age given in the marriage register suggests he was born about 1847, though the age at death registration suggests about 1842, so halving the discrepancy with the true date.
I think Joseph was lying about his age, to make the difference between him and his wife not so great.
It is possible that Joseph John, son of William and Ann, died and that they had another they named Joseph Gotham POTTER. However, for this to be the case 3 things seem to be missing: the burial of the first Joseph, the baptism of the 2nd and the birth registration of the 2nd. It is highly unlikely all three would be missing / mistranscribed. Hence I do believe this Joseph is the son born in 1836.
