Frances Gotham POTTER, [G-D(AD)]
Set As Default Person -
Name Frances Gotham POTTER Suffix [ONS gp] [G-D(AD)] Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Mar Q 1846 Newton Abbot Reg Dist, Devon, England
- GRO ref: Potter, Frances Gotham q1 1846 Newton Abbot RD 10 169; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Gotham
Gender Female Middle name relationship Her mother's maiden name - Frances GOTHAM was the married name of her maternal grandmother so she might have been named after her, though I think most likely she was named after her mother's sister, born Frances GOTHAM. This Frances' had an older sister Mary Ann, and that was the name of another of her mother's sisters.
Died 8 Aug 1849 Mulberry Street, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
Cause: Scarlet fever (10 days); Cynanche Tonsillaris - GRO ref: Potter, Frances q3 1849 Newton Abbot RD 10 114; GRO online index (viewed 13 Oct 2017) shows age at death as 4
Details from death registration (GRO register entry)
'Cynanche Tonsillaris', alias Quinsy, was an inflammatory sore throat, anacute inflammation of the soft palate around the tonsils, often leading to an abscess. A paper in the BMJ about a fatal case about the same time as Frances' in 1849 remarks on "the extremely rare fatality of cynanche tonsillaris (quinsy)". It therefore seems probable that Frances would have lived had it not been for the scarlet fever.
Buried 11 Aug 1849 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 13 Nov 2014)
Shown as aged 4, abode West Teignmouth
I am guessing the burial was this Frances; no middle name shown in the burial register, nor parents names, and age should have been 3.
However, there were no other Frances Potters born in Newton Abbot Reg Dist around this time, so I think it was this Frances.
