Elizabeth
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1590 - estimated from dates of baptism of her children, and the fact she had been married before (though must have been a young widow)
Gender Female Bequest 22 Nov 1615 In the will of her first husband William Jarman - William left a house with its ground and appurtenances (not the one they lived in but one with a tenant) to his daughter (Joan) but gave the use to Elizabeth, but for this she had to pay the rent etc. and make a payment to Joan. Not knowing how much income the house would have raised it is not clear to what extent Elizabeth benefitted from this arrangement. She was also the residuary legatee, but again there are no records to show the size of this bequest.
Although she was clearly young, unusally none of this was dependant on Elizabeth remaining a widow - which may have enabled her to make a 'better' subsequent marriage than she would otherwise have been able to.

Family 1 William JARMAN, b. Est 1584, d. Between 16 Mar 1613/14 and 22 Nov 1615 (Age ~ 30 years) Married Bef 16 Mar 1613/14 - Since William left a will proved in 1615 from which it can be seen he was of Cockington and left a young wife Elizabeth I think that this was probably the Jarman (German) to whom Elizabeth was married before she married Andrew Gotham.
A Court of Chancery case in 1632 (ref. C 2/ChasI/G1/25) confirms that Elizabeth's husband before she married Andrew was William Jerman (transcription started, will be added when complete).
The only child mentioned in William's will is Joan. The BTs survive for the years 1612 to 1614, and do not include the baptism of Joan or another child of William, but it is possible there was another born in 1615 or posthumously in 1616, years for which neither PRs nor BTs survive.
Similarly, marriages in Cockington PRs only survive from 1632, and while BTs for most years around this time have been lost, those for 1612-14 survive, but do not contain the marriage of William Jarman to Elizabeth (images on FS browsed).
(no marriage licence for the marriage in 1612 or 1613 NS in Vivian; have yet to look earlier)

Family 2 Andrew GOTHAM, b. Est 1585, (probably), Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
, bur. 10 Mar 1673/74, St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England
(Age ~ 89 years) Married Abt Feb 1615/16 - Date based on date of marriage licence.
The marriage is not in Abbotskerswell PRs. The PRs for Cockington only survive from 1632 and the BTs for 1615 and 1616 do not survive either.
Most likely the marriage took place in Cockington, or in Exeter when they went there to obtain a licence.
But, am I merging 2 Andrews?
There was a gap and change of place between Humfrey baptised in 1616 and Thomas in 1622. The two places are near each other, and I could be missing a baptism or two. Weight is added to the theory that the children were offspring of the same couple by the burial of an Elizabeth, wife of Andrew in Wolborough in 1632/3. I wondered if Andrew had had two wives both called Elizabeth, but there were a couple of Chancery Court cases involving the Andrew who married Elizabeth German/Jarman; looking at these confirms that Andrew's wife Elizabeth formerly Jarman who he had married in 1615/16 was still living in 1632 and that Andrew was then described as of Newton Abbot (i.e. was in Wolborough Parish), so it seems safe to conclude there was just one Andrew who fathered the children shown here and just one wife Elizabeth.
The earlier Chancery case, in 1618, does additionally refer to an Andrew and Margaret Gotham; I have not come across another mention of these, so they probably lived in a parish whose PRs do not survive from this time. There was an Andrew in Abbotskerswell at the time of the 1581 tax - was he the one who was married to Margaret?
Marriage License 12 Feb 1615/16 Exeter, Devon, England
- Vivian shows a licence issued on 12 Feb 1615/16:
"Andrew Gotehman of Abbotskerswell and Eliza German of Cockington, widow"
Given that Andrew was of Abbotskerswell and the licence was about 10 months before the baptism of a first child of this couple I'm sure it must be for them, despite the mangled surname.

The will of William Jarman (d. c. 1615)
Of interest because his widow subsequently married one Andrew Gotham
